Pony Express 100km Ultra Marathon

My first 100km race back in May 2013 and I got these two trophies! Needless to say, I was very happy with how well I did. I was awarded 2nd place overall and I came 1st in the 40+ year old male category.

Suprising result!

Blisters!

My first 100km race resulted in some amazing blisters! Foot management is going to be REALLY important in the desert. Sand in the running shoes et al.

The Heat Chamber

Preperation for the desert. Here I am in 40 degree heat on a treadmill at Nottingham-Trent University in their special heat chamber, measurring speed, exertion and core body temperature.

You'll never guess where you have to put the temperature probe...

Pilgrim

Next race for preparation for race day is on 1st/2nd February 2014 and is called the Pilgrim Challenge Ultra.

A tough off-road 66 miles (106Km) over two days, following the route of the North Downs Way National Trail, the Pilgrim Challenge Ultra is firmly established as one of our best loved multi-stage ultra races. The North Downs Way was once trodden by pilgrims heading for Canterbury and travelers bound for Dover and the Continent. Today, the Pilgrim Challenge follows a glorious section of the ancient route, passing through countryside, picturesque villages and areas of outstanding natural beauty.

This was one of my 'detours' on day 1! to get around the raging River Mole at Dorking....but we didn't avoid getting our feet wet after all!

Start line. About 200 competitors. Sold out event

Really muddy and slippy conditions.....which added to the fun!

Bedtime!....

Medal and race number.

More muddy running!
